There was probably another level to it. It's only guesswork as far as that goes since something about the powers was off, or I had it off.

[ oh, there's probably a lot more. dick just didn't get to stick around and see it. ]

[ He was half-expecting this, but it still stirs him up. ]

[ if a shrug could be audible, it'd be the loudest part of this conversation. just another failure, defected, not good enough to save anyone.

but then he stops, eyes going a little wide. ]

What? No. We don't kill, you're not killing anyone. [ and sure, dick's aware it could have just been a saying, but the image of jason standing with him in that area makes it sit a little heavily in his ears. ]

[ A big, big part of him means it. If Dick is any good at reading the intonations in a person's voice, he would be able to tell. While Damian does occasionally kid around about what he would like to do to certain criminals, none of this is a joke.

But he also knows he has a line he's not supposed to cross. For your benefit, Dick, he won't argue back. ]

Tt. [ He's still seething. ]

We can't let them get away with this.

[ damian can probably hear the relief in dick's voice when he doesn't argue. can probably hear the way he rubs at his face. he's fourteen years old, why does he feel like he's aged twenty in the last few weeks? ]

We won't. They'll pay for this and everything they've done, but we're not killing them to do it.

What can we do? Lock them up? It doesn't work the same way it does back home.

[ He's not blaming you, Dick. Just frustrated! ]

Something. Anything but that. We don't kill, that's the whole point, because as soon as you kill you're just as bad as they are and-

[ he sighs. ]

It's not the first time it's happened. People die here all the time.

[ He is still not satisfied with this. ] That only means it will happen again. Am I supposed to let it --?

You don't have to let anything happen. It's not like I wanted to die in there, Damian. But it happens.

[ which is...wrong. really wrong. but it's what staying in haven this long will do to you. ]

We'll find them together, okay? [ if he has to babysit someone his own age, so be it. ]

'It happens' ...? [ He doesn't like how resigned Dick sounds to all this. While Damian has a very warped view of just how permanent death is, and usually sees it as more a personal failure than a tragedy, it's different when it involves a person he actually gives a damn about. ]

You can't just brush this off, like it's nothing! They toyed with you, Grayson! They toyed with your life.

[ But the last thing manages to placate him a little. At least Dick isn't trying to stop him from trying. ]
